Montonico grapes grow in large, elongated, cylindrical clusters. The berries are medium-sized, round, with a very thick greenish-yellow skin and abundant pulp, which yields a fresh and floral must. It’s a late-ripening variety, reaching maturity at the end of October. Its strength lies in its resistance to fungal diseases and its excellent capacity to withstand drying. Traditionally, bunches were tied and hung to dry until Christmas, when they would be eaten.
The wine has a straw-yellow color with greenish reflections, aromas of flowers and wild herbs, and grapefruit. On the palate, it offers pleasant freshness, easy drinkability, savory notes, and a vibrant citrus finish.
Montonico Superiore Abruzzo DOC is a white wine with a straw-yellow hue and some greenish highlights. It’s an uncommon wine that pairs beautifully with raw fish dishes and fresh vegetable crudités. Its savory yet well-structured taste also makes it a perfect match for vegetable veloutés such as leek, black cabbage, or porcini mushroom soups. It can also be enjoyed with fresh cheeses. A good ratatouille or oven-grilled vegetables enhance the wine’s marked acidity. For pasta dishes, it’s an ideal companion to linguine with clams or pesto. As for meat courses, it complements white meats like lemon scaloppine, either by contrast or affinity. Its pronounced acidity cleanses the palate and prepares it for new flavors.
